Aligned Storage Rules Would Simplify Node Planning

Planning node storage is easier with consistent rules, and a proposal advanced on Ethereum’s Oct. 29, 2026 core call aims to provide them.

The proposal changes how consensus clients retain blocks so that the rule matches the one used for blob and historical data.

The Current Situation

Different kinds of data follow different retention rules. That variety makes it harder to estimate how much space a node will need over time, since each rule has its own pattern.

The Proposed Alignment

By using the same approach for blocks, blob data and historical data, the proposal would simplify the picture. Operators could predict storage more reliably.

Support From Client Teams

Client teams that backed the proposal pointed to predictability as the reason. They said steadier storage would help operators plan hardware and avoid surprises.

Status

The idea reached considered status, which means developers are still weighing it. It is not guaranteed a place in Hegotá and needs more testing and support.

Alongside Other Changes

The call also scheduled a beacon state cleanup that trims outdated fields from the record of validators and chain status. Other considered proposals address attestation bundling and chunked payloads.

Timing

Glamsterdam is aimed at late 2026 and Hegotá follows, expected around mid-2027, with no activation dates yet. ## Practical Note

Operators do not need to act now. Client release notes will show if the change moves forward.

Planning Examples

Imagine an operator deciding what size of drive to buy. With uneven retention rules, they must guess how much space each kind of data will need and leave a large margin. With aligned rules, they can estimate more tightly and avoid overspending. Multiply that by many operators and the result is less wasted hardware and fewer surprises. Developers cited exactly that kind of benefit when explaining their interest, and client teams said it was the reason they supported the idea.

Why Consistency Helps Everyone

Consistent rules are easier to explain, easier to test and easier to maintain. New contributors can learn one pattern instead of several. Operators can reason about their machines more simply. Developers noted that such simplification is often undervalued, though it pays steady dividends, since fewer special cases mean fewer places for misunderstandings to creep in as the software evolves.

A Practical Takeaway

For operators, the best move today is to follow client announcements and leave current setups as they are. If the retention proposal advances, documentation will explain how storage estimates change. Until then, there is nothing to adjust, and the main value of the discussion is a clearer sense of the direction developers are exploring for node resource planning.
